Of Mice and Men Album Review by Pryti

Of Mice and Men Album Review by Pryti

I’m Pryti a hard rock singer songwriter you may remember me from reviewing Deftones album ‘Gore’. I’m now reviewing ‘Cold World’ by Of Mice and Men.

I love this band their previous albums ‘The Flood’ and ‘Restoring Force’ are some of my favorites so I was very excited to hear the new album. David Bendeth, who produced ‘Restoring Force’, produced ‘Cold World’.

There are things I love about the album. The band has incorporated more nu metal, which is awesome. You can definitely hear influences from Linkin Park, Korn, Tool and Slipknot. ‘The Real’ is a great track it opens with nu metal distorted synths. It reminds me of Three Days Grace in places, this is where I started to get into the album. I especially enjoyed the pre chorus after the second verse it gave a nice breather and the chorus was catchy.

Contagious and Pain are good mosh pit tunes. They remind me of my teen years and keeps with the nu metal ethos of this album. ‘Pain’ is all about the struggles Austin has been going through with his health and it opens with a very Korn riff and dirty nu metal goodness. ‘-‘ reminds me of Celldweller it’s a great sci fi sounding track perfect for a film trailer. I think that this would have been an awesome track to open the album with. The ‘Hunger’ is also a good song it reminded me more of how the band used to be like. I love how Austin’s screams complement Aaron’s singing.

‘+’ is a lovely instrumental, very classical and makes you feel more hopeful. ‘Away’ was my favorite track I loved the chord progressions used in the intro it has such a 90’s beginning. I love the lyrics ‘if it’s your choice then pull me out and push me away.’

I wasn’t a fan of ‘Relentless’ I just don’t think rap metal suits them. ‘Game of War’ was an ok track I thought it would be better at the end of the album. I wasn’t that keen on ‘Transfigured’, ‘Like a Ghost’ and ‘Down the road’. I liked the verses of ‘The Lie’ I felt the tempo dropped too much in the chorus.

To be honest I wasn’t keen on the album when I first heard it.  After a few listens it did grow on me. ‘Cold World’ doesn’t have some of the magic that ‘Restoring Force’ had. I loved every song instantly on ‘Restoring Force’. I like that they are trying new things because if you don’t try how will you know. ‘Cold World’ reminded me of Linkin Park’s ‘Reanimation’ album in a lot of places. I do think that this is a good album. I look forward to their next album and see what they do.
